Rate of Pay:Band 6: $39.86 - $43.53 per hour (Subject to CUPE 1015 Agreement)
Location:Operations Centre
Duties:The Journeyperson Carpenter – Parks Services position is responsible for a variety of Parks maintenance and construction duties. To keep our Parks and facilities safe for users, the Carpenter tends to the day-to-day maintenance, inspections, repairs, and appearance of all Parks buildings, playgrounds, amenities, and park furniture throughout the City. This role will lead small teams to manage the installation or construction of various Parks projects including installation or replacement of playgrounds, concrete pads and foundations, building renovations and construction, and recreation facility improvements.

Duties
  • Perform routine internal and external preventative maintenance and inspections to buildings and facilities. Including but not limited to carpentry.
  • Building renovation work including framing, boarding, mudding, taping, sanding and painting, door installation, trim work, cabinet work, railings and installation of windows.
  • Inspecting exterior building envelopes and roofs for possible signs of failure and rectify as soon as possible and report to Supervisor.
  • Carrying out duties that require the use of scissor lift, boom lift, ladder and scaffolding.
  • Construct, erect, install, maintain, and repair structures made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials.
  • Be responsible for construction, routine inspections, repair, and on-going maintenance of park amenities and maintenance facilities including but not limited to playgrounds, park furnishings, courts, features, buildings, fencing, irrigation and landscaping projects.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements.
  • Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools.
  • Assist or lead the planning and development of construction projects as well as the collection of project quotes
  • Assisting and organizing other staff and contractors when required.
  • Ensuring that contractual work is completed to all standards and regulations required.
  • Provide assistance and recommendations to management on future projects.
  • Operate turf and maintenance equipment such as but not limited to skid steer, tractors, augers, trenchers, mulchers, and mowers.
  • Maintain and install landscape materials and structures throughout parks and greenspace includes but not limited to seeding, mowing, mulching, fertilizing, aeration, and irrigation systems.
  • Perform and assist in care for trees, and shrubs which includes tree replacement, removal, watering, and maintenance.
  • Assist in rehabilitating damaged turf
  • May be required to oversee and assist in the training of summer seasonal parks staff.
  • Maintain and remove pathways of snow, garbage, and debris. Pick up litter and remove bagged trash in park amenities and facilities
  • Construct and maintain outdoor hockey rinks and pond ice surfaces.
  • Will be occasionally required to assist with the removal of snow or ice from walk surfaces or rink surfaces.
  • Reporting all issues and concerns with equipment, safety, facilities, vandalism, and procedures.
  • Keep accurate documentation such as, time sheets, equipment inspection sheets, hazard identification forms, and daily work records.
  • General cleaning of worksite, equipment and park amenities
  • Perform heavy lifting and manual labour.
  • Safely and competently operate and perform maintenance checks and inspections on all assigned equipment, including mowers, large tractors, trucks, bobcats, bucket trucks
  • Perform and assist in cemetery operations which include but not limited to the interments, disinterment’s, grounds and facility maintenance.

  • Other related duties as required.
  • Assume the role of team lead when required
  • Will take an active part in the City of Lloydminster’s Health and Safety Program.
  • Successful candidate will be required to complete training on operating equipment.
Schedule:
 
Standard hours are Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. with on-call and weekend shifts.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalency
  • Completion of Carpenter Trade Certification with Red Seal from a recognized institution
  • Must be capable of operating table saws, planers, band saws, Routers, mitre saws and small maintenance equipment and hand tools in an efficient, responsible manner in accordance with recognized procedures.
  • Recent 5yrs commercial building experience.
  • Previous building maintenance experience is preferred.
  • Experience in the planning and layout of construction projects, interpretation of maps, sketches, drawings and blueprints, or specifications and/or technical manuals
  • Minimum of 5 years' Experience with the construction and deconstruction of concrete pads including forms, and finishing.
  • Experience in the collection of material quote for small projects
  • CCPI (Canadian Certified Playground Inspector) Certificate or ability to obtain one within 3 months.
  • Competently operate various types of equipment including but not limited to skid-steer, tractors, lawn mowers, and side by sides
  • Experience with the installation of in-ground utilities would be considered an asset
  • Skid steer landscaping and snow removal experience is considered an asset
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License registered in Alberta or Saskatchewan with an acceptable Driver’s Abstract is required. This position will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business purposes.
  • Must be able to work at heights using an aerial device safely and efficiently
  • Must have the ability to work responsibly alone under minimal supervision and work well within a team of employees.
  • Previous supervisor/lead-hand experience is considered an asset
  • Proficiency in keeping accurate documentation such as, time sheets, equipment inspection sheets, hazard identification forms, and daily work records, via Smart devices/computers/cell phones
  • Must be able to stand for a long period of time with bending and reaching motions. The position does include some lifting up to 50lbs.
